When God Chooses to Save Souls Instead of Nations
When God Chooses to Save Souls Instead of Nations
Reflections while studying Judges 6–8
While studying the story of Gideon in Judges 6–8, a thought settled into my mind with surprising clarity. If God could conquer the Midianites through Gideon and only three hundred men—an intentionally impossible military situation—then surely He could purify any government on earth today. He could throw down oppressive regimes, expose corruption, or raise up righteous leaders in a single generation. His power has never been the limiting factor.
But that does not seem to be His focus in our day.
Again and again, the scriptures show that God is far more concerned with the condition of His covenant people than with the condition of their political institutions. He refines individuals long before He restructures nations. He prepares hearts before He rearranges kingdoms. And today, He seems to be directing His people not to subdue human enemies, but to strengthen themselves against a far more dangerous one.
The true battle for mankind is approaching, and it will not be won through governments or armies, but through faith, covenant loyalty, and teaching.
God Allows Upheaval Because He Honors Agency and Refines His People
As I pondered Gideon’s story, another truth became clear: God has purposefully allowed upheaval, chaos, and instability in the world—not because He is absent, but because He honors agency and uses adversity to refine His children.
President Russell M. Nelson taught that mortality was designed to give us “opportunities to grow that would not otherwise be possible” (The Power of Spiritual Momentum, Apr. 2022). Trials, uncertainties, and even societal turbulence become the very conditions that turn our hearts to Him.
Elder Neal A. Maxwell expressed it even more directly:
“The furnace of affliction is not a comfortable place, but it is where the Lord refines us.”
(But for a Small Moment, Apr. 1986)
God allows the world to shake so that we will learn to stand in holy places. He allows institutions to fail so that we will stop trusting in the arm of flesh. He allows hardship so that we will discover His strength in our weakness.
This is not neglect. It is divine strategy.
God’s Power Is Undiminished—But His Priorities Are Eternal
President Russell M. Nelson has repeatedly emphasized that the Lord’s greatest work in our day is spiritual transformation, not political intervention. He teaches that the Lord is “hastening His work in its time” (Let God Prevail, Oct. 2020), and that our spiritual preparation is the key to participating in it.
In other words: God can intervene temporally, but He is choosing to intervene spiritually.
This mirrors the lesson of Gideon. God deliberately reduced Gideon’s army so Israel would understand that deliverance comes from Him—not from numbers, strategy, or political strength (Judges 7:2).
The Real Enemy Is Not Flesh and Blood
“We wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against… spiritual wickedness.”
(Ephesians 6:12, quoted in Dale G. Renlund, A Framework for Personal Revelation, Apr. 2022)
This aligns perfectly with the Lord’s pattern in the latter days. He does not command His people to overthrow governments. He commands them to gather Israel, strengthen Zion, and prepare spiritually for the return of the King of Kings.
God’s Focus Is Our Souls, Not Earthly Power
“To do well those things which God ordained to be the common lot of all mankind is the truest greatness.”
(Joseph F. Smith, Gospel Doctrine, p. 285)
God measures greatness not by political influence or military might, but by the quiet, consistent discipleship of His children. Nations rise and fall, but souls are eternal.
The Adversary—Not Other People—is the True Threat
“The whole study of the Devil is to destroy.”
(Brigham Young, Journal of Discourses, 13:280)
The adversary’s aim has never been political conquest—it is spiritual destruction. And God’s counterstrategy is not to topple governments but to fortify His people.
Victory Comes Through Covenant Faithfulness, Not Armies
“The Lord… has delivered you into our hands… because of our religion and our faith in Christ.”
(Alma 44:3–4)
This is the same message God gave Gideon. And it is the same message He gives us today.
The Eternal Perspective Makes Everything Clearer
“We are eternal beings living in a mortal world… Only with an eternal perspective does any of this make sense.”
(Neal A. Maxwell, Endure It Well, Apr. 1990)
When viewed through an eternal lens, it becomes clear why God is not rearranging governments on our timetable. He is preparing a people who can stand in holy places, discern truth from deception, and withstand the spiritual storms prophesied to precede the Savior’s return.
Conclusion: The Gideon Pattern Is Still God’s Pattern
God could overthrow nations today just as easily as He did in Gideon’s time. But He is choosing a different work—a deeper work. He is shaping souls, strengthening families, gathering Israel, and preparing the world for the final spiritual conflict between truth and deception.
The battle ahead will not be won by force, but by faith.
Not by armies, but by disciples.
Not by political upheaval, but by spiritual awakening.
And in that work, every one of us is called.
